ABOUT
The ECS Manitoba Student Chapter was founded on June 10th 2021 by students at the University of Manitoba. We hoped to promote comradery between electrochemists and other students within the Canadian Prairies that are interested in electrochemistry and ECS.
ECS refers to the Electrochemical Society. It is a nonprofit organization focused on electrochemical and solid state science and technology, and allied subjects. ECS is a great source of scientific research through its various journals, international bi-annual meetings, and digital library. It is also great way for both students and researchers to network since it consists of more than 8000 members from 85 different countries with diverse interests in all fields of electrochemistry and solid state.
Current Members
Luma Lopes
President - PhD
Luma Clarindo Lopes is a PhD student from Brazil. She holds a master’s degree in Applied Chemistry from the State University of Ponta Grossa. Her research focuses on electrochemical investigation of antibiotic resistance through bacterial efflux and influx mechanisms.
Mariam Odetallah
Vice President - PhD
Mariam is a Ph.D. student at the University of Manitoba, Christian Kuss research group. Her research focuses on the electrochemical characterization of composite electrodes using advanced techniques such as X-ray tomography and scanning electrochemical microscopy. Thus, she can investigate the reasons behind the battery failure and develop new binders to improve the battery performance.

Christian Kuss
University of Manitoba
Christian Kuss studied chemistry at University of Technology, Dresden in Germany, and completed his Ph.D. in battery chemistry at Université du Québec à Montréal, Canada. He continued his training in electrochemical materials at McGill University, Canada and the University of Oxford, UK as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow. In the process of developing battery materials, he worked with General Motors, Johnson Matthey and other key industrial partners. He lists publications in Nature Materials, Energy & Environmental Science and Chemical Science, as well as two patents. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba and a member of the Manitoba Institute for Materials, where he conducts research on electrode structure and charge transport in batteries.
